Programs in this sector
A food processor can fund projects through sector programs administered notably by the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec and by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, through general investment programs such as ESSOR from Investissement Québec, and through tax credits, foremost among them SR&ED. The projects most often funded concern equipment and automation, food safety and certification, and access to new markets.

Investment
Equipment purchases, automating a line, expanding a facility: these projects are funded by grant or by loan, and must be applied for before the expense is incurred.
- 02
Food safety and certification
Upgrades required by a recognized certification, and the compliance work that goes with them, are the subject of dedicated programs in this sector.
- 03
Markets
Developing markets outside Quebec, trade missions and bringing a product up to the standards of a foreign market are funded by CanExport and by provincial programs.

Frequently asked questions
Equipment and automation projects are funded mainly through investment programs such as ESSOR from Investissement Québec, through agri-food sector programs, and through investment tax credits. Eligibility depends on the size of the company, the region and the nature of the project.
Yes in almost every case. Direct grant programs fund a future project and refuse expenditures already incurred at the filing date. It is the most frequent and the most avoidable cause of refusal. Tax credits, by contrast, are claimed afterwards.
Yes. Facility upgrades, equipment required by a recognized certification and the associated compliance work are the subject of dedicated programs in the agri-food sector, both in Quebec and federally.
Yes, but the assistance received is deducted from the SR&ED base: the grant collected reduces the expenditures eligible for the credit. The net total therefore depends on the order in which applications are filed and on how expenditures are allocated between the two.
